Non-gynaecological cytology (exfoliative cytology)
Exfoliative cytology comprises all organ areas which are accessible for cytological examination by swabbing, puncture or fluid:
- Sputum
- Bronchial secretions, bronchial lavage, BAL
- wabs of the skin and mucosal surfaces
- Effusion aspiration (pleura, ascites, joints)
- Urine
- Urinary bladder / urinary tract irrigation fluids
- Nipple secretions
- CSF
Submission instructions
Bronchial secretion/lavage
Submit immediately without supplements
- BAL with or without cell differentiation
- Submit immediately without supplements
- Ideally with as little contamination by bronchial secretion as possible
BAL with cell differentiation: advance registration by telephone required (044 269 99 88).
Should be given to our courier by no later than 3 p.m. the same day.
EBUS (endobronchial ultrasound-guided puncture)
Submerge the entire material in Cytolyt; place additional material in NaCl or PBS if lymphoma is suspected.
- Brush swabs in general
- Swirl the brush thoroughly in ThinPrep medium (optimum fixation)
- Submit immediately without supplements
Shelf life: max. 24 hours in the refrigerator
